When COVID-19 hit in March of 2020, transit agencies across the country, including SporTran, faced a public health emergency which caused them to limit the number of passengers per vehicle.
In addition, SporTran reduced Saturday service was reduced to limit the chance of infection for riders and staff.
Survey respondents requested that SporTran increase Saturday service in Shreveport and Bossier. They agreed that increased Saturdays will open up the cities for shopping, dining, entertainment, family and more.
“We decided to undertake public surveys in 2023 because our riders have more insight than anyone into what SporTran does right and what we can do better,” said SporTran CEO Dinero Washington. “We were already contemplating efforts to make our service more robust; we knew we were on the right track after reading the public’s thoughts. Full Saturday service is back in Shreveport, and this is the first time in many years that we’ve expanded service into areas that have never had it before. That’s huge.”
Zero Fare –
In 2022, SporTran was awarded a federal grant to cover the cost of fare for riders through Dec. 31, 2023. The goal of the grant was to bring ridership back to public transit after passenger numbers across the nation fell during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since implementing zero fare, SporTran ridership has increased 353%, demonstrating how great the need for public transit is in Shreveport-Bossier.
A large number of SporTran’s Community Feedback Survey respondents asked for Zero Fare to continue. The expense of bus and OnDemand fare is a barrier to ridership for many. The survey requests for extended Zero Fare affirm comments from numerous community organizations who have seen a marked increase in access to their services and care with Zero Fare in place.
SporTran is pleased to announce that all bus, OnDemand, and OnDemand ADA rides will remain Zero Fare throughout 2024.

Four-story, 155,000-square-foot structure is first new building on campus since 2008
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards was in town Monday (Dec. 11) to help LSU Health Shreveport officials unveil the Center for Medical Education, which was under construction for the past 2.5 years. More than 400 invited guests joined LSU and LSU Health Shreveport leaders to celebrate completion of the $79 million project.
The four-story, 155,000-square-foot structure is the first new building on campus since 2008. People will move into the $79 million Center for Medical Education in phases starting in January. It’s expected to be fully occupied in the spring.
“An investment in Louisiana’s healthcare and scientific workforce is a win for our entire state, which is why the opening of the Center of Medical Education at LSU Health Shreveport is such an important achievement,” Gov. Edwards said. “This state-of-the-art facility gives Shreveport every advantage to equitably compete for top-tier students from both near and far.
“Given LSU Health Shreveport’s long and impressive record of retaining graduates in Louisiana, and providing care for underserved and rural areas, I am confident that this center will prove beneficial in the immediate future and for decades to come.”
The center is strategically located adjacent to LSU Health Shreveport’s three professional schools, making it a hub for training the next generation of healthcare and research professionals.

The building’s Wellness Center features cardio and fitness studios, a multipurpose gymnasium and a teaching kitchen to promote the importance of proper nutrition for students and patients. The building also includes food services and spaces for student leisure, academic support and administration. Thee’s also an open and sheltered outdoor plaza.
And the 11,780-square-foot Center for Emerging Viral Threats (CEVT) research, education and training facility is an important component of the new building, officials said. The research space will act as a training ground for students, physicians and scientists.
It will consist of a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory and a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory with an additional lab space, enabling both advanced research on viral pathogens and molecular testing for different viruses serving public health needs. The BSL-3 Lab will be the first of this magnitude in North Louisiana, enabling LSU Health Shreveport researchers to further study important emerging human pathogens and fortify the university’s position to quickly address future pandemics.

City of Garland, Arkansas advises to reduce the usage of water to help replenish full water pressure. Please stop dripping faucets as temperatures are above freezing. Try to limit usage for essential needs only and not in excess if possible. No time frame is available at this moment for full restoration, but it is expected to at least take a few days to restore full water pressure. Also boil advisory is in effect until further notice.

UPDATE (Jan. 19): Currently, our scientists are out pulling samples to test and send to the Louisiana Department of Health, putting us one step closer to lifting the boil advisory. As we continue to navigate challenging weather conditions, we want to remind you that our city remains under a boil advisory. The safety of our water supply is of utmost importance. Additionally, forecasted freezing temperatures for the upcoming weekend (Jan. 19 and 20) necessitate the continuation of precautions. We kindly urge all customers to drip their faucets to prevent freezing.
“In these critical times, each drop saved contributes to the sustainable management of this essential resource,” said William Daniel, director of Water and Sewerage. “Your conscientious efforts in water conservation play a pivotal role in securing a resilient water supply for our community. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
In response to multiple fire emergencies, scattered water main breaks, and a substantial number of private service line blowouts affecting the water distribution system, the City of Shreveport has expanded its voluntary boil advisory to include the entire city, effective immediately (Jan. 17).
William Daniel, director of Water and Sewerage, emphasized the need for caution in light of significantly low water pressure and possible isolated outages in various areas of the city.
“Due to the challenges posed by recent events, we are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Daniel.
The advisory recommends that residents and businesses boil water for one full minute in a clean container before consuming it, making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation. Daniel added, “The voluntary boil advisory will remain in effect until samples are collected, analyzed, and cleared by the Department of Water & Sewerage, in coordination with the Louisiana Department of Health.”
Residents are encouraged to disinfect water through boiling and follow safety precautions until satisfactory laboratory test results are obtained. Once the water is deemed safe, the Department of Water & Sewerage, with approval from the Louisiana Department of Health, will rescind the advisory and notify the public promptly.
In the event of busted water lines or any other emergency water-related issues, customers are encouraged to contact the Department of Water and Sewerage’s emergency line at 318-673-7600. Our dedicated team will respond promptly to address and resolve any urgent matters.
NOTE: Due to loss of City of Shreveport water pressure, services provided at WK Pierremont Health Center, Willis-Knighton Medical Center, WK Portico outpatient services, and WK Rehabilitation Institute on Line Avenue may be affected. Washing clothes is fine. Just do it on the highest water temperature. And use the highest setting on your dryer when you get done. If something might shrink, hold off on washing it until after the boil advisory is lifted.

If you lack the facilities to boil the water, you can chemically disinfect the water by one of the following methods:

WHAT TO DO AFTER A BOIL ADVISORY IS LIFTED
Residents are advised to “flush” their water following the lifting of a boil order in order to clear plumbing of potentially contaminated water. Flushing your household and building water lines includes interior and exterior faucets; showers; water and ice dispensers; water treatment units, etc.
Cold water faucets: Run tap water until the water feels cold, one minute or more, before drinking, brushing teeth or using for food preparation. If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run the cold water first.
Hot water faucets: To clear hot water pipes and water heater of untreated water, flush the hot water line for a minimum of 15 minutes for a typical household 40-gallon water heater, 30 minutes for an 80-gallon water heater or larger. Hot water is then safe to use for washing hands and for handwashing of dishes, pots and pans, etc. Never use water from the hot faucet for drinking, cooking or other internal consumption.
Dishwashers: After flushing hot water pipes and water heater, run dishwasher empty one time.
Humidifiers: Discard any water used in humidifiers, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), oral, medical, or health care devices, and rinse the device with clean water.
Food and baby formula: Discard any baby formula and other foods prepared with water on the day or days of the boil order. If unsure of the dates, contact your water department.
Refrigerator water dispenser: Refrigerator water dispensers should be flushed by at least one quart of water. If unsure of your dispenser’s capacity, refer to your manufacturer specifications.
Ice cubes: Automatic ice dispensers should be emptied of ice made during the boil water order and run through a 24-hour cycle, discarding the ice to ensure purging of the ice maker water supply line. For medical, dental, and food service establishments, refer to the guidance from your local health department.

'The Empress of Ice' took to skating in her backyard following the winter storm that hit Louisiana Sunday evening.
Olympic Gold medalist Oksana Baiul posted on video on social media of her ice skating in her Shreveport backyard on Monday, Jan. 16.
Her post said, "when you moved to #Shreveport and have sadly been deprived of ice beneath my golden blades for almost 2 years…and you are planning your exit…God opens up the sky and blessed us with private ice in our backyard."
Baiul is a retired competitive figure skater and is known for her accomplishments with the 1993 World Figure Skating Championship and the 1994 Winter Olympic Championship where she won a gold medal in ladies' singles.
Baiul is originally from Ukraine but has lived in the United States since 1994.
Shreveport is a stranger to winter weather and Baiul said, "It doesn’t snow in #Shreveport they say, well remember #God is always watching and hears our #prayers, always!"

The City of Shreveport is excited to announce the groundbreaking proposed collaboration with renowned artist and entrepreneur 50 Cent.
On Monday, Nov. 20, the Mayor of Shreveport, Tom Arceneaux and members of the Shreveport City Council spoke to the public and media to announce the new collaboration.
"I am very excited today to announce a proposed collaboration with a fella named Curtis Jackson, who many of you know as 50 Cent, and his company G-Unit for the use of Millennium Studios, which is a property of the City of Shreveport," said Arceneaux.
According to Arceneaux, this collaboration marks a significant step forward in leveraging public-private partnerships for economic development and job creation in Shreveport.
Under the proposed agreement, Shreveport and G-Unit will have a 30-year lease, with an option for a 15-year extension for the Millennium Studios facility.
The yearly rent for this facility will be $2,400 a year, but according to Arceneaux this collaboration will save the city nearly $180,000 a year.
"This will relieve the city of about $180,000 per year in maintenance and upkeep expenses," said Arceneaux. "I've been asked why the low rent; the low rent is because of the savings to the city."

This revitalization of Millennium Studios is expected to have a cascading effect on job creation, attracting talent to the area and contributing to the overall economic resurgence of Shreveport.
Orville Hall a representative of 50 Cent said, "I've actually been in Shreveport now going on seven years, researching the city and knowing the potential of Shreveport... this is going to be a great thing for the city, he has 20 shows over five networks so this building will be busy."
He continued by saying, "let's all tell the world, Shreveport is open for business."
The ordinance for this collaboration was proposed in Shreveport City Council on Nov. 14, and will reappear in the horseshoe on Dec. 12 for approval.
"Hopefully the members of the City Council will approve it," said Arceneaux.
Shreveport City Councilman James Green said, "thank you 50 Cent for deciding to come to Shreveport and make it your home. It's a great day for a great day."
