Relief for motorists commuting on Interstate 565 is coming, but bridge work may cause some interruptions in the coming weeks, according to the latest Alabama Department of Transportation report to the Huntsville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.
According to the Feb. 11 ALDOT report, there are more than $386 million in projects in the Huntsville metro area. The number does not include the Resolute Way interchange project approved last year by the Huntsville City Council.
The most expensive project on the list is the U.S. 72 widening from Providence Main and County Line Road. The estimated cost of the project, which will be built in three phases, is now up to $92.2 million.
But dirt is not expected to move in the $18 million first phase of the project until Fiscal 2027. The first phase runs from Providence Main to Huntsville Memorial Gardens and includes bridge work. Plans for the phase are 90% complete, but ALDOT is addressing comments about components of the environmental assessment.
Construction of the $36 million second phase from Huntsville Memorial Gardens to Walnut Street is not expected to start until Fiscal 2029. The review of the plans is 30% complete.
Construction on the $38.2 million third phase from Walnut Street to County Line Road is not expected to begin until Fiscal 2030. Preliminary engineering for the phase is expected to start this fiscal year.
The highway is one of the most traveled, with 128,657 motorists per day west of Research Park Boulevard into Madison.

Construction on the $44.2 million project is 66% complete. The contractor is working on the southern approach and the bridge structure.

“Terry’s nearly 40 years of expertise is informed by both his military service in the Alabama National Guard and civil service with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command,” Whiting said in a news release Thursday. “This experience – paired with his deep ties to the surrounding community – will prove invaluable as he leads our efforts on Redstone Arsenal to expeditiously relocate our warfighting organization while ensuring that the perspectives of both our military and civilian workforce are clearly represented.”
The first members of USSPACECOM’s headquarters staff are already on the ground at Redstone Arsenal, forming a dedicated Project Management Office focused on military construction and infrastructure. Whiting made the announcement shoulder-to-shoulder with Grisham as part of a visit with the PMO team during a day-long tour of facilities on Redstone Arsenal.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the USSPACECOM team as the on-ground lead to continue establishing our permanent headquarters on Redstone Arsenal,” Grisham said. “It’s a great honor to both represent the command in our community, and as a longtime resident of Northern Alabama, serve as an ambassador to welcome our workforce home.”
Grisham will lead the team – known as the command’s “South Detachment,” alongside deputy director Col. Raymond Ruscoe, who previously served as the director of USSPACECOM’s European Command Joint Integrated Service Team (JIST). In addition to managing the requirements for military construction and infrastructure, being on-ground full time will facilitate greater engagement with local and state leaders.
In September 2025, the President announced USSPACECOM’s relocation to Redstone Arsenal, a move that underscores the command’s critical role in safeguarding America’s interests in space. The command has been working since that time to lay the groundwork for a purpose-built headquarters on Redstone Arsenal. This effort was recognized by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth during a ceremony at Redstone on Dec. 12, 2025, where he remarked that, “We are deadly serious in committing to cutting every piece of red tape and bureaucracy to get this headquarters established as quickly as humanly possible.”
Martin Traylor, deputy to the garrison commander, said during a roundtable at the Huntsville-Madison Chamber shortly after the relocation announcement that the headquarters can be fully operational within three years.
The move is expected to bring between 1,400 and 1,700 direct jobs once the move is completed from Colorado Springs.
