If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that nothing feels quite as good as a full night's sleep. When you sleep well, it sets the tone for the rest of your day. You wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go. It's almost like the world knows when you sleep well: your morning coffee hits just right, the sun shines just a little brighter, and you've got a little extra pep in your step.

Your friends and colleagues may notice, too, especially if good sleep is becoming a foreign concept for you. If it is, you're not alone - according to the CDC, people around the U.S. are in need of some serious zzzz's - more than 1 in 3 Americans aren't getting enough sleep. Perhaps even more shocking is that 40% of people fall asleep during the day once a month, according to the National Institutes of Health. Experts agree that most folks should get at least seven hours of sleep a night, but in reality, most Americans struggle to get five or six.

While some ultra-rich CEOs claim they only need a few hours of sleep a night, that's not true for most people. In fact, your body and brain will hate you if you're not getting enough shuteye. If you're feeling sluggish, unmotivated, snappy, achy, sick, or just down in the dumps, you may not be getting enough sleep. And it may not be your fault - that old, dilapidated innerspring mattress that you're sleeping on may be the true culprit.

Fortunately, Sleep King is here to help you get on the fast track to falling asleep with the ultimate comfort of MLILY mattresses in Montgomery, AL.

5 Ways to Tell If You Need a New Mattress

Take a moment and think about all the different things that have happened in your life over the last decade. Maybe you graduated college or got the job of your dreams. Perhaps you got married or moved to a new home in a new state. But if you're like the average person, one thing remained the same: your mattress. It might be surprising to hear, but the average lifespan of a mattress is between seven and ten years.

Letting go of your old, worn-out mattress might be hard, especially if it's served you well over time. As with most products, however, nothing lasts forever. But how do you know when it's time to ditch your old bed and choose a new MLILY mattress in , AL? Here are just a few of the most common reasons that customers tell us when it comes to buying a new bed.

Pungent Odor

Pungent Odor

Is your mattress starting to smell less like roses and more like the dirty socks in your hamper? When your mattress gets smelly, it's most often a result of mold, fungi, and mildew buildup over time. There's not too much you can do to avoid this from happening, especially if you live in a humid climate. So, the next time you change your sheets, give your mattress a sniff. If it smells funky, it's time to upgrade.

Saggy Mattress

Saggy Mattress

If your mattress has a noticeable sag, it's a surefire sign that you need to get a new mattress. Mattresses sag because, over time, coils begin to weaken, and memory foam loses elasticity. If you lay down on your bed for a moment, get up, and your bed sags instead of returning to its original appearance, your mattress is nearing the end of its life.

Pain

Pain

Waking up in pain is basically the an thesis of what a mattress is supposed to do. Due to wear and tear over time, even the best mattresses lose their ability to support your body. If you've been waking up with dull aches and pains in your hips, lower back, or shoulders, it's a red flag. Finding a comfortable, supportive mattress like an MLILY Fusion Lux is of utmost importance.

Tossing and Turning

Tossing and Turning

Constantly moving side-to-side or switching positions in the middle of the night is a great way to get your partner angry. It's also a big sign that you need to consider buying a new mattress. Like the supportiveness of our mattresses, general comfortability also lessens with usage and time. Here's the truth: You shouldn't need to toss and turn to get comfortable in your bed. If you are, your mattress has probably declined in quality and needs replacing. You shouldn't ever have to put your sleep health on the line for an uncomfortable mattress.

What are the Benefits of a Good Night's Sleep?

It might sound obvious, but the #1 reason why people choose to buy a new mattress is to get better sleep. Sleep, in and of itself, is a bit of a mystery - somehow, our bodies just know when it's time to clock out for the day and go to sleep. But if you've been sleeping on a poor quality or dilapidated mattress for long enough, you might have become used to the feeling of lackluster sleep. If that sounds like you, we're here to tell you that you're missing out.

Getting a great night's rest is one of life's little pleasures, but according to experts, it's also much more than that. If you swear by limiting your sleep to be more "productive," you may be doing yourself a disservice.

Better Heart Health

When you don't get enough sleep on a regular basis, it can lead to serious heart issues like high blood pressure and even heart attacks. Why? Because poor sleep causes your body to release cortisol. This stress hormone causes your heart to work harder. That's great in some situations, but long stretches of poor sleep are quite bad for your heart. Like other parts of your body, your heart needs to rest in order to function correctly.

Boosted Immune System

Getting a cold is never fun. But if it feels like someone slapped your head with an anvil when you get the sniffles, you may need better sleep. When you get great sleep, the proteins and immune cells in your body have a better chance of fighting off things like the common cold and flu. Your immune system also helps mitigate symptoms like runny noses, congestion, headaches, and more. Without the right sleep, symptoms from colds and cases of flu will be much worse.

Improved Mood

Do you roll out of bed and feel like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh? You're probably not getting great sleep. When you sleep well, you wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready to attack the day. Your energy levels are high, making life's little annoyances more manageable. And when you're not annoyed, you're typically not angry. When you're not angry, you're only a half-step away from being happy. So, put on our PJs and get to bed early on an MLILY mattress in , AL. Your friends and family will thank you!

Increased Productivity

Earlier, we mentioned how some people purposely lose sleep so that they can be more productive. On the surface, that makes some sense since you have more hours in the day to dedicate to work. However, burning the midnight oil again and again is a bad idea. Eventually, you'll start making mistakes that an afternoon pot of coffee won't fix. Instead of cutting your sleep short, try getting more. Studies show that great sleep is linked to higher cognitive function and improved concentration. If you're not purposely limiting your sleep, it's time to ditch that old mattress and swing by Sleep King.

Supercharge Your Weight-Loss Efforts

Getting eight or more hours of sleep doesn't mean you're going to lose lbs. overnight. But getting better sleep can seriously help with your diet or weight loss goals. When you get poor sleep, your body creates a hormone called ghrelin that causes you to get hungry. It also lowers the amounts of leptin in your body, which is a hormone that lets you know you're full. With great sleep, these hormones remain balanced, so you don't wake up finding for a sugary bowl of Captain Crunch.

The Alabama Port Authority, in partnership with CSX, broke ground Thursday on the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility. This state-of-the-art facility will enhance freight mobility and stimulate economic growth throughout the region.

The project is funded through federal appropriations secured by former Senator Richard Shelby. Since the Port announced the project in 2022, the area surrounding the facility has attracted over $3 billion in economic development investments from private companies, further solidifying Montgomery’s position as a key logistics hub.

Governor Kay Ivey shared, “Whether it’s boosting freight transportation, fostering economic development, or connecting key industries in the state, the Port of Mobile – or as I like to call it, the ‘Port of Alabama’ – means big business. With this expansion of the Port to a more central area of our state, we will strengthen Alabama’s freight connectivity with a larger, less congested reach. I am proud to work with Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair, the Port Authority, CSX, and other industry leaders to ensure our Alabama-made and Alabama-sourced goods have the opportunity to reach all 67 counties.”

Located on a 272-acre site with direct access to Interstate 85 and Highway 31, the Montgomery ICTF has a throughput capacity of 60,000 TEUs per year – effectively 30,000 shipping containers – and will provide seamless rail and truck connectivity between central Alabama and the Port of Mobile.

“The Montgomery ICTF is a game-changer for freight movement in Alabama and beyond,” said John Driscoll, Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority. “This facility will provide businesses with seamless access to global markets, driving economic growth and strengthening our state’s supply chain infrastructure.”

CSX, a key partner in the project, will serve the facility, ensuring efficient rail connectivity between the Port of Mobile and inland markets.

“This project is a significant step forward in advancing Alabama’s supply chain connectivity and economic growth,” said Christina Bottomley, CSX Vice President of Business Development and Real Estate. “This inland port will transform how freight is moved across the state — shifting more goods from congested highways onto the sustainable, efficient rail network that CSX operates.”

The facility will operate five days a week, offering express daily service from the Port in Mobile to Alabama’s automotive and manufacturing hub in Montgomery. Additionally, this facility will relieve stress on the interstate system as the Port sees additional cargo volume following the deepening of Mobile Harbor.

The Montgomery ICTF is expected to be operational by 2027, and will provide critical intermodal services that enhance Alabama’s competitive advantage in global trade. Once complete, the Montgomery ICTF will look similar to the Mobile ICTF. For additional details on the Montgomery facility, click here.

Additional comments on the Port Authority’s progress were provided by a multitude of Alabama leaders and departments heads.

“As Alabama’s economy continues to grow rapidly, state leaders must remain committed to finding innovative solutions aimed at efficiently moving goods from the point of production to the point of sale,” said Speaker Ledbetter. “The Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility will serve as a significant asset for the River Region and the entire state. Between our interstates, highways, inland waterways, and ports, Alabama is utilizing every tool at its disposal to keep the wheels of commerce turning,” Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, Alabama State House of Representatives.

“By enhancing connectivity between the Port of Mobile and inland shippers, this logistics facility will open doors for job creation and new opportunities across multiple industries in Montgomery and beyond,” said Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “This project really demonstrates the power of strategic partnerships and having spent much of my career at the Montgomery Chamber, I know that this facility will generate economic momentum in the region for years to come.”

“Today’s groundbreaking for the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility marks a historic step forward for our region’s economy and infrastructure. This facility will strengthen our supply chain, attract new business opportunities, and create jobs that will benefit Montgomery County for generations to come. We are proud to support this investment in our future, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community and beyond,” Chairman Doug Singleton, Montgomery County Commission.

“With the rapid growth of our industrial sector, Montgomery is emerging as a premier logistics hub for the Southeast—centered around the transformative Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility,” said Anna Buckalew, President and CEO of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. “This investment is already fueling billions in economic development, strengthening our supply chains, and creating new opportunities for businesses to thrive. Strategic public-private partnerships like this are reshaping our region’s future, making Montgomery a critical gateway for global commerce. The leadership of the Alabama Port Authority has been invaluable in this effort, and we are proud of our partnership with this engine driving growth across the state.”

“Whether over water or rail, in partnership with the Port and the state of Alabama, our goal is to help our customers get their goods to market efficiently and cost-effectively. The Montgomery ICTF is a key component of our ability to serve businesses across the state and country and is something our customers should leverage as an extension of our waterfront operations in Mobile,” Brian Harold, Managing Director, APM Terminals Mobile.

Montgomery Academy has had its eyes on the school’s first AHSAA state basketball title all season.

The second-ranked Eagles will have a chance to win it Friday.

Montgomery Academy outscored Glencoe 22-12 in the second quarter and 25-9 in the third on the way to an 84-49 semifinal rout Tuesday afternoon at Legacy Arena.

“It’s just the second time in school history that we’ve made it this far,” Eagles’ coach Jeremy Arant said. “I would be lying if I told you it wasn’t something we have been talking about all the way back to May or June. We’ve had our eyes on it. We’ve used it to fuel us every day. We’re excited to have the opportunity and, hopefully, we can put on a show.”

Montgomery Academy (33-2) will play No. 8 Mars Hill Bible (24-8) for the Class 3A title at 2:15 Friday. The Panthers, who won the Class 2A state title a year ago before moving up a classification, defeated Houston Academy in the day’s first semifinal.

“We didn’t come this far to lose,” MA senior Skyler Stovall said. “We are going to go after it and go get it.”

The Eagles pulled away from Glencoe early behind a dominating rebounding effort. Montgomery Academy outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 45-17, leading to a 64-20 advantage in points in the paint and a 20-0 advantage in second-chance points.

“(MA assistant) coach (Gerald) Williams came in a month ago and said he thought our biggest advantage going forward would be offensive rebounding and rebounding in general because of the size of our guards,” Arant said. “It’s something we work on every day and stress every day. The kids bought in and realized if they crashed the boards they could get some easy baskets.”

It worked Thursday as MA pulled down 19 offensive rebounds.

“One statistic you always look at is rebounding,” Glencoe coach Ryan Chambless said. “If you can’t outrebound a team, you will have a tough time beating them.”

MA led just 24-15 after one quarter but began pulling away in the second quarter. The Eagles led 46-25 at the half and 71-34 after three quarters. Arant began emptying the bench late in the third quarter. Ten Eagles played at least two minutes in the win.

Stars of the game: Stovall and Braden Gordon each scored 17 for MA. Stovall had 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Gordon had 6 rebounds.

“I don’t know if Skyler has competed any harder against anyone than he does against Braden in practice,” Arant said. “They have full on battle every day in practice.”

Stat sheet: Montgomery Academy – Jarrett Friendly had 16 points and 6 rebounds. Cade Segars had 11 points. DJ Vinson added 9 rebounds, 3 assists and a pair of blocks. Glencoe – Garett Morgan led all scorers with 20 points. Wade Segrest followed with 18.

By the numbers: MA took 23 more shots than Glencoe (68-45). The Eagles were 6-of-11 from 3 and 2-of-6 from the foul line. Glencoe was 5-of-21 from 3 and 15-of-15 from the foul line. The Eagles also had huge advantages in points off turnovers (25-4), fastbreak points (33-7) and bench points (30-7).

Did you know? Glencoe led for 12 seconds in the game at 3-2. Montgomery Academy’s largest lead was 35.

Did you know 2? Montgomery Academy’s only losses this year came against a pair of ranked Class 7A teams in Auburn and Huntsville.

The said it:

“I have all the respect for Glencoe and what coach does. They are one of the hardest teams to prepare for. This was really the first time we have taken time to go over the things a team does in the halfcourt. They have a lot of wrinkles. Our kids bought in to defending and guarding as a team, and that has been the difference for us this year. We are talented on offense, but they really defend. At times, it seems like we have six or seven guys out there. It’s really fun to see.” – Arant.

“I’m proud of our guys, proud of this team and especially the seniors. They brought a lot of tradition back to Glencoe. I’m proud of the effort and their approach to every practice and every game all year long. I told them to walk out with their head held high. Montgomery Academy is a tremendous team. They are very well coached and have a lot of length and size. I thought they played a great game. Our guys played tough. It just wasn’t our day.” -- Chambless

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - After nearly a month of waiting, hundreds of employees at Big Lots’ distribution center in Montgomery officially learned they will lose their jobs in the company’s sale to a private equity firm.

The Alabama Warn list listed 491 potentially impacted employees, as of Christmas Eve. The list, managed by the Alabama Department of Commerce’s Rapid Response Unit, identifies business and industry closures and layoffs affecting the state’s workforce.

Despite a targeted Jan. 6 layoff date, employees remained on the job as the national retailer announced on Dec. 28 that it had reached a deal to be sold, giving hope that many of its nearly 1,000 stores and distribution centers would stay open instead of close as part of a bankruptcy plan.

The company did not immediately share any public updates on layoff announcements after the bankruptcy court on Jan. 2 approved its sale to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, a firm that specializes in distressed companies. That silence led some at the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce to believe that Big Lots executives were waiting for a Jan. 21 court hearing before making any decisions.

The Jan. 2 sales agreement stipulated that the new owner wanted between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores “and up to two distribution centers.” The news is now official, however. Big Lots says the Montgomery plant will be among those slated to close.

“Close to 500 jobs will be lost,” said Anna Buckalew, Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, “but Montgomery’s rapidly growing logistics footprint and surging industrial base create strong opportunities to absorb the workforce.”

Despite that positive outlook, Buckalew noted that, “to a loved one, a family, elimination of a job is devastating.”

Buckalew said the Chamber and its industry partners are working to help those affected by the closure.

Montgomery’s plant will cease operations on Feb. 28. Immediate support for displaced workers is available.

The Chamber said the first job fair starts Thursday at the distribution center and runs from 1-5 p.m.

Industry partners that are taking part in the job fair include:
