Tips on Choosing the Best Bed

There's much more to choosing a good bed than how you think it will look in your bedroom. There's plenty to think about, from innerspring options to memory foam and even hybrid mattresses. At Sleep King, our priority is our customers. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service. We want to do right by you, which why we want to be sure you find the perfect bed when you visit our mattress store in Hattiesburg, MS. To help you get started, here are a few tips on choosing the best bed for your sleep needs.

Visit a Showroom

Visit a Showroom

This tip might seem like a no-brainer to some, but it's important that you visit a showroom so that you can lay on different beds to get a feel for what you like. At Mattress King, you will have the chance to explore different styles, designs, and shapes, and mattress materials. Finding a bed online at a price you can afford is great, but you should lie on the bed first, not just look at it on a screen.

Determine Budget

Determine Budget

Here's a surprising fact: just because a mattress costs more money, it doesn't mean it's going to be a better bed. Sure, more expensive beds might have newer technologies and materials, but not everyone has the budget to walk into a mattress store in Hattiesburg and spend $3,000. Figure out what price range you're comfortable paying and look at the best options for your bottom line.

 Furniture Store Hattiesburg, MS
Consider Bedroom Size

Consider Bedroom Size

Before you swing by our showroom and start trying out beds, it might be a good idea to measure the space where your new mattress will go. If your bedroom is on the small side, a king-sized bed might be too big. Similarly, a small bed in a huge room might make for strange aesthetics. Aim for a reasonable amount of room around your bed - enough where you can walk around comfortably. As mentioned above, get specific measurements of the area you plan to use. That way, you have peace of mind knowing your new mattress will fit in your bedroom.

Consider Bedroom Size

Choose a Mattress Material

This tip often comes down to personal preference. It will take a little bit of trial and error to figure out which material works best for your back - innerspring, memory foam, or latex. While your friend's and family's opinions matter, keep in mind that their mattress choice was subjective. What works for them won't necessarily work for you.

Need a quick refresher on different mattress materials? Here's a quick overview
 King Bedroom Sets Hattiesburg, MS

Innerspring

Also called coil mattresses, innerspring beds are probably the most well-known on this short list. Innerspring mattresses are often more affordable than their latex and memory foam counterparts. These beds are ideal for people who want a lot of support and a cooler night's sleep.

Latex

This material is known for its great cooling properties and overall comfort. With latex, there are no strange off-gassing odors like you sometimes get with memory foam. Latex mattresses are ideal for people who want a responsive, bouncy feel and may have problems sleeping hot.

Memory Foam

First developed by NASA in the 70s, memory foam is probably the most popular material in the modern mattress market. Memory foam conforms to every inch of your body, giving you maximum comfort and support. Memory foam is also know for its anti-motion properties. Memory foam can be a great choice if you tend to toss and turn at night and sleep with a partner who wakes up when you do. Memory foam mattresses are ideal for people who need pressure relief, good support, and refreshing comfort.

Think About Your Back

Think About Your Back

If you have a bad back, it's crucial that you find a mattress with proper support. Slat and spring beds often offer plenty of support, but latex and memory foam options have come a long way. If you want memory foam or latex but find the support to be subpar, consider an adjustable base instead of a normal platform. That way, you can always sleep in a comfortable position that benefits your back.

The Southern Miss Powwow returns Saturday, Nov. 18 to Spirit Park on The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Hattiesburg campus, an annual celebration of the culture and traditions of Native peoples. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Presented in part by the USM Golden Eagle Intertribal Society, the Powwow schedule includes the following activities:

*Gourd Dancing beginning at| 11 a.m.

*Grand Entry at 1 p.m.

*Closing song at 7 p.m.

“In addition to being a space to gather socially as Natives and also bring their unique cultures, art forms, crafts and food to everyone, the Powwow provides an opportunity for Native students to practice being what they will eventually become - leaders, culture bearers, and role models in Indian Country, said Dr. Tammy Greer, associate professor of psychology who serves as advisor to the Golden Eagle Intertribal Society.

Attendees will also be able to participate in a potato dance and intertribal dances, and enjoy Powwow dancers, music, and art, as well as food from local vendors at the event. Also featured will be ham radio operators with the Pine Belt Amateur Radio Club broadcasting messages from the Powwow to the world. “Their call sign is "W0W" and this year they are focused on educating folks around the world about our Palmetto Huts,” Dr. Greer said. “If you have youth who want to experience what it is to be a ham radio operator and interact with the equipment, bring them to the powwow.”

Lanena John, community liaison for GEIS and a tribal member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, said the Powwow is not only a ceremony and social gathering for reconnection, but also for spiritual healing.

“The Powwow dances are the medicine that heals and uplifts the spirit within us,” John explained. “From the drum beat to the intricate footwork, there is a connection between the dancer and drummer to the Creator.”

Lici Beveridge

Hundreds of excited shoppers waited outside in the cold Thursday morning for the new ALDI grocery store to open its doors.

Autumn Tate of Hattiesburg arrived at the store at 3:20 a.m. to be one of the first in line.

"It's like my Christmas came early," she said. "I've looked forward to this for a very long time."

The grand opening was announced on the company's website, and word spread quickly as many customers, such as Tate, had waited for over a year to shop at the chain grocery store.

Latanga Donaldson of Hattiesburg arrived at 9 a.m. carrying her ALDI shopping bag, ready to join the crowd in the store, but when she saw how far the line ran, she changed her mind and decided to return after the opening rush had passed.

Donaldson and her family moved to Hattiesburg from Minnesota, where she shopped at ALDI regularly.

"ALDI is great," she said. "They have the best food. Their stock changes all the time. It's great quality food and good service."

ALDI and city officials were on hand to welcome new customers and held a ribbon-cutting to mark the store's official opening.

"We are grateful that ALDI made the investment in our city," Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker said at the ribbon-cutting. "We continually see this town renew itself in growth. We're excited to have the ALDI family as part of that growth."

The ALDI in Hattiesburg will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily

“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier, and we’ve been voted the price leader for six years running,” said Heather Moore, regional vice president for ALDI. “We’re excited to open our first ALDI store in Hattiesburg and introduce local customers to a new, more affordable way of shopping.”

What you need to know:Never shopped at ALDI? Here are some tips before you go to the new Hattiesburg store

Hattiesburg has not seen any new grocery store options for over 20 years. It is home to the family-owned Corner Market stores. Other chain grocery options include Winn-Dixie, Walmart and Target.

In 1998, Albertsons opened a store across from Walmart Supercenter on U.S. 49 but closed three years later.

Here are a few things to note about ALDI:

Calling craft beer fans: See what's new at this downtown Hattiesburg event

The 10th annual Hattiesburg Craft Beer Festival once again will fill Town Square Park in the spring after it was moved last year to March to beat the broiling summer heat."Town Square Park will be transformed into everyone's favorite beer festival," said Andrea Saffle, Downtown Hattiesburg director. The 10th annual Hattiesburg Craft Beer Festival once again will fill Town Square Park in the spring after it was moved last year to March to beat the broiling summer heat.

"Town Square Park will be transformed into everyone's favorite beer festival," said Andrea Saffle, Downtown Hattiesburg director. "The Hattiesburg Craft Beer Festival has evolved into a standout occasion for both the city and its downtown area."

The festival is a fringe event connected with FestivalSouth, a multi-discipline arts event held each June in Hattiesburg. This year will be FestivalSouth's 15th season.

Preceding the craft beer festival is another FestivalFringe event — the return of the FestivalSouth Film Expo with two events on March 2 that celebrate the work of actor Claude Rains, grandfather of Hattiesburg resident Abigail Lenz Allen, cofounder of Hattiesburlesque.

The festival began after Mississippi updated its beer laws in 2012, allowing for the sale of beer up to 10% alcohol by volume and opening the doors for breweries to begin producing a variety of beers. Subsequent laws provided for breweries to open taprooms and sell a limited amount of beer on the premises.

Brewpubs also have become popular in the state with several locations offering specially made microbrews produced at the same place they are served.

The craft beer festival is one of the main events that draws visitors to the downtown area, which stays pretty busy year-round, said Marlo Dorsey, director of VisitHattiesburg.

"Last year, nearly 1 million people visited downtown Hattiesburg," she said. "What sets the craft beer festival apart is the focus on the artisans and the creators behind the brews. When we add the element of FestivalSouth and all the artistry they celebrate, this truly becomes an event like no other in the entire state and the Southeast."

Roy Windham, owner of The Porter Public House, said his restaurant, which has always catered to craft beer aficionados, began making its own brews about five years ago, but has participated in the craft beer festival almost from the beginning.

"To be a part of that, to be able to participate and have a brew that we produced downtown, is amazing," said Windham, who has attended the craft beer festival since its inception. "We always help support when we can. Obviously, we're big craft beer fans."
