Sleep King Golden Mattresses

The Golden brand is lesser known than some, like Tempurpedic. Still, it is a quality product with many foam and non-foam options that we think you'll love. Choose from standard memory foam, hybrid, and innerspring options while visiting our showroom in Gulfport.

Tips on Choosing the Best Bed

There's much more to choosing a good bed than how you think it will look in your bedroom. There's plenty to think about, from innerspring options to memory foam and even hybrid mattresses. At Sleep King, our priority is our customers. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service. We want to do right by you, which why we want to be sure you find the perfect bed when you visit our mattress store in Gulfport, MS. To help you get started, here are a few tips on choosing the best bed for your sleep needs.

Visit a Showroom

Visit a Showroom

This tip might seem like a no-brainer to some, but it's important that you visit a showroom so that you can lay on different beds to get a feel for what you like. At Mattress King, you will have the chance to explore different styles, designs, and shapes, and mattress materials. Finding a bed online at a price you can afford is great, but you should lie on the bed first, not just look at it on a screen.

Determine Budget

Determine Budget

Here's a surprising fact: just because a mattress costs more money, it doesn't mean it's going to be a better bed. Sure, more expensive beds might have newer technologies and materials, but not everyone has the budget to walk into a mattress store in Gulfport and spend $3,000. Figure out what price range you're comfortable paying and look at the best options for your bottom line.

Consider Bedroom Size

Consider Bedroom Size

Before you swing by our showroom and start trying out beds, it might be a good idea to measure the space where your new mattress will go. If your bedroom is on the small side, a king-sized bed might be too big. Similarly, a small bed in a huge room might make for strange aesthetics. Aim for a reasonable amount of room around your bed - enough where you can walk around comfortably. As mentioned above, get specific measurements of the area you plan to use. That way, you have peace of mind knowing your new mattress will fit in your bedroom.

Consider Bedroom Size

Choose a Mattress Material

This tip often comes down to personal preference. It will take a little bit of trial and error to figure out which material works best for your back - innerspring, memory foam, or latex. While your friend's and family's opinions matter, keep in mind that their mattress choice was subjective. What works for them won't necessarily work for you.

Need a quick refresher on different mattress materials? Here's a quick overview
 King Bedroom Sets Gulfport, MS

Innerspring

Also called coil mattresses, innerspring beds are probably the most well-known on this short list. Innerspring mattresses are often more affordable than their latex and memory foam counterparts. These beds are ideal for people who want a lot of support and a cooler night's sleep.

Latex

This material is known for its great cooling properties and overall comfort. With latex, there are no strange off-gassing odors like you sometimes get with memory foam. Latex mattresses are ideal for people who want a responsive, bouncy feel and may have problems sleeping hot.

Memory Foam

First developed by NASA in the 70s, memory foam is probably the most popular material in the modern mattress market. Memory foam conforms to every inch of your body, giving you maximum comfort and support. Memory foam is also know for its anti-motion properties. Memory foam can be a great choice if you tend to toss and turn at night and sleep with a partner who wakes up when you do. Memory foam mattresses are ideal for people who need pressure relief, good support, and refreshing comfort.

Think About Your Back

Think About Your Back

If you have a bad back, it's crucial that you find a mattress with proper support. Slat and spring beds often offer plenty of support, but latex and memory foam options have come a long way. If you want memory foam or latex but find the support to be subpar, consider an adjustable base instead of a normal platform. That way, you can always sleep in a comfortable position that benefits your back.

As a state, Mississippi is a treasure trove of small towns and undiscovered gems. The capital of Jackson is by far the state’s most populous place, but outside of that mid-sized city, Mississippi is all about smaller communities. The town of Gulfport, located on the state’s Southern coast abutting the Gulf of Mexico, falls somewhere in between. With around 70,000 full-time residents, Gulfport is the state’s second largest locale. Yet when compared to other Southern vacation hubs, it remains a lesser-known destination that offers plenty to do, yet won’t leave you feeling lost in the crowd. If you’re looking for a coastal escape that offers more than just sand, sun, and surf, Gulfport is an easy answer. Yes, there are dozens of opportunities to get out on the water, but there’s also a healthy art scene, a lively entertainment district, and plenty of delicious local restaurants where you can have a great meal. Here’s how to spend a weekend in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Things To Do

As the town’s name suggests, the main attraction in Gulfport is its easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. Coastal Mississippi encompasses 26 miles of white-sand shores, and Gulfport’s beaches make up six of them. Everyone’s first day in Gulfport should be a beach day. You can easily park at Gulfport Beach and unload everything you need for a day of fun in the sun—from a cooler of fruity drinks to chairs, umbrellas, and beach toys. The Gulfport Beach Waterfront Complex gives easy access to the Boca Ciega Bay beach, plus a fenced playground, pavilion, restrooms, volleyball net, and fishing pier.

Venture offshore to one of the area’s most notable attractions, Ship Island, located 12 miles off the coast of Mississippi. Ship Island Excursions offers a once- or twice-daily ferry between Gulfport and Ship Island during spring, summer, and fall. Once you get to the secluded barrier island, managed by the National Park Service, you can explore historic Fort Massachusetts, splash in the swimming area, or enjoy the pristine beaches. If the one-hour ride over is your favorite part of the experience, consider booking a second trip with Ship Island Excursions. In addition to the ferry, they also offer a Dolphin Watching Cruise and Starlight Cocktail Cruise.

True thalassophiles (also known as ocean lovers) will want to round out their water-centric trip with a visit to the Mississippi Aquarium or Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. The Mississippi Aquarium goes beyond the beach to tell the complete story of Mississippi’s waterways, from the Delta to the coastline and the Mighty Mississippi River to the marshy bayous. Home to 12 fresh and saltwater habitats and more than 200 species of aquatic animals, the aquarium is a thrill for folks of all ages. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies expounds on your aquarium experience with special shows and encounters featuring dolphins, sea lions, birds, reptiles, stingrays, and more.

When you’re ready to shift gears and explore on land, you can start by getting acquainted with Gulfport’s excellent art scene. Downtown Gulfport is full of local flavor, from its many lively bars and nightlife options to its excellent dining and shopping. But nowhere is downtown Gulfport’s funky flair more apparent than in Fishbone Alley, a former utility alley that’s now a hub for arts, culture, and community interaction. The “urban living room” functions as an ever-changing art gallery and gathering space where artists from across the region share their talents in the form of murals, panels, and paintings. If you’re inspired by what you see, continue to Gulfport Arts Center or Negretto’s Frame + Art to level up on your hunt for fabulous local art.

Places To Eat

Gulfport doesn’t leave much to be desired when it comes to dining out. Whether you’re an early riser or prefer to wake later in the day, Boozer’s Brew has you covered. The Gulfport institution pulls double duty as a drive-thru coffeehouse and an indoor breakfast and lunch café. You’ll find everything from protein shakes and bagel sandwiches to fresh salads at its two Gulfport locations. Another place to get your morning joe is Coast Roast, a downtown coffee shop that’s all about curating a warm and inviting atmosphere and serving locally roasted beans.

If you jam-pack your morning full of activity (and that’s easy to do in Gulfport), lunch might not come soon enough. When deciding on a spot, choose your own adventure between three distinct cuisines: keto-, vegan-, and gluten-free-friendly fare at Blue Dog Bistro; classic Mississippi seafood at White Cap; or a hot and cheesy slice at Tony’s Brick Oven Pizzeria. Cap off a great meal with a sour fruited Beet Bum or Surfside Pineapple Wheat beer at Chandeleur Island Brewing. For a more traditional dessert option, head to Coast Candymakers inside Island View Casino and Resort. Glass cases filled with fudge, pralines, caramels, turtles, and chocolate-covered fruits galore await your perusing pleasure.

Dinner in Gulfport requires that you slow down and savor your experience. At Captain Al’s Steak and Seafood, located on Captain Wharf’s Marina, every day is a party. Come by land or sea and take full advantage of all the complex has to offer, including a sand bar beach, island bar, aquatic nature exhibit, live music, kayak rentals, and a pool. Dinner offers views of the water, excellent drinks (try the Shark Bite with coconut rum, Captain Morgan, whipped vodka, blue curacao, pineapple, and sour mix), and steak cooked over an open fire. If you’re more into surf than turf, there are oysters, lobster, shrimp, crab, and fish served a million different ways to suit your taste. Another waterfront hotspot is Flamingo Landing, where there’s live music nearly every night and bottomless brunch on the weekends. Go for dinner, and be sure to order something that’s covered in their special Go-Go Sauce. The Shrimp A Go-Go Po’boy features fried shrimp dressed with Go-Go sauce, grilled pineapple, macadamia nuts, corn salsa, and lettuce, all on Leidenheimer French bread.

It's not just coastal fare that Gulfport gets right. Trade sunny Gulf views for aged wood, bourbon barrels, and rustic but refined lodge-style ambiance at The Rack House Steaks & Spirits. Order from a list of 30 wines and more than 100 bourbons, ryes, whiskey, and scotches. After all, The Rack House did start the Gulf Coast’s first Bourbon Society. Dinner options are based around expertly prepared steaks and other luxury cuts of meat like rack of lamb and porterhouse pork.

Where To Stay

You don’t have to bet big to enjoy a resort-style getaway in Gulfport. Island View Casino & Resort offers an adults-only luxury experience with its two hotels (one even has beachfront views), spa, golf course, and 18 different dining options. A beignet café, daiquiri bar, specialty steakhouses, and buffets are all part of the culinary mix.

Nicknamed the Crowned Jewel of the Mississippi Coast, Centennial Plaza Resort is a destination in and of itself. The 48-acre complex sits directly across from Gulfport’s white sand beaches and has been around for more than 100 years. Guests have an option between rooms in the Grand Centennial Hotel or family suites in Oasis Resort. The property also hosts a giant water playground, 950-foot-long lazy river, zero-entry swimming pool, and two dining options.

You’re more likely to find white sand than snowflakes during Christmas season on the Mississippi Coast, but there is no shortage of celebrations to get you in the holiday spirit.

From Bay St. Louis to Pascagoula, Coast communities celebrate the season with lighted boat parades, spectacular decorations and fireworks displays, musical entertainment and, of course, visits from Santa.

Below are a few of the top events happening across the Coast:

Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival

The Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival brings more than 1.5 million colorful Christmas lights spread across 40 acres in Jones Park, earning its status as the “Most Magical Show in Mississippi,” according to OnlyInYourState.com.

Now in its ninth year, the festival has been featured in the popular Lifetime holiday movie “Christmas in Mississippi” and attracted more than 200,000 visitors in the last two years. Many people return to enjoy the new elements added each year.

A central highlight of the festival is Santa’s Village, with its animatronic and interactive reindeer. Santa Claus himself meets guests every night except Christmas Day from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors can take free pictures with Santa, and share their wish lists with him. There are also fun carnival rides, a Train Station offering a journey on the festival train and the Dancing Trees show that combines music and light in a dazzling display.

Christmas at Beau Rivage

Beau Rivage, MGM Resorts International’s beachfront resort in Biloxi, is a favorite holiday destination known for its winter wonderland de?cor and seasonal entertainment. Poinsettias by the thousands, hundreds of trees and a 25-foot Christmas tree create a memorable holiday experience for visitors of all ages. The seasonal de?cor is available for viewing throughout the holidays.

Beau Rivage also offers two entertaining productions as part of its holiday celebration. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Ballet Theatre presents the classic "The Nutcracker" for a matinee and an evening performance Sunday, Dec. 3.

"Finding Christmas," a Broadway-style musical variety show, returns to Beau Rivage Theatre’s stage Dec.15-27 for two shows daily except Monday, Dec.18.

Biloxi’s Christmas on the Water Boat Parade

The 38th annual boat parade along Biloxi’s waterfront will feature 35 to 40 boats of all shapes and sizes, decked out in holiday lights and fanciful decorations. The parade starts at the Biloxi Lighthouse and travels east to the Golden Nugget casino where the boats turn around and head back to the Biloxi Yacht Club. A fireworks display lights the sky at the end of the parade. Organizers say the best parade viewing locations are between the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor and Casino Row and between the Biloxi Lighthouse and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino.

Christmas in the River City Moss Point

The Moss Point Christmas by the River Boat Parade is the big finale to the all-day Christmas in the River City celebration. The boat parade begins at 5:30 p.m., featuring boats decorated for the holiday in the Pascagoula River at Riverfront Park.

The day’s activities start at 9 a.m. with the Audubon Christmas Marketplace at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center. At 1 p.m. the Christmas Parade on Main Street starts rolling from the Southgate Shopping Center, then heads to Riverfront Park.

Christmas on the Bayou Gulfport

The lighted boat parade, which was first held in 2000, has been recognized as a Top Twenty Event in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. The parade begins at 6 p.m. in Gulfport Lake, travels down Bernard Bayou before continuing down the Industrial Seaway and ending back at Gulfport Lake. Public viewing is available at Gulfport Lake and James Hill Park along with several waterfront restaurants.

Community Christmas celebrations

Just about every Coast city has its own festival to get the holiday season rolling, and one of the longest running holiday celebrations can be found in Pascagoula, where Downtown for the Holidays has been held for more than 20 years.

This year, the event will be from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 1 in Downtown Pascagoula. The event begins with the community Christmas tree lighting at the corner of Delmas Avenue and Magnolia Street at 5 p.m., followed by performances by local dance groups, choirs and theatre groups. At 7:30 p.m. the Christmas Parade of Lights gets underway with a special tribute to Pascagoula native Jimmy Buffett. There are activities for all ages including cookie decorating, horse-drawn carriage rides and photos with Santa. The Flagship District is full of downtown shops and restaurants that will be open with specials for Christmas shoppers.

Jackson, Miss. (February 1, 2024) – CORE X GULFPORT, a subsidiary of CORE X Partners, is establishing cold storage operations at the Port of Gulfport. The project is a more than $73 million investment and will create 73 jobs.

CORE X Partners is a leader in the global supply chain and cold storage industry. As part of a national network of full-service, cold chain operations, CORE X GULFPORT will serve food producers and manufacturers throughout the region from a new 150,000-square-foot cold storage facility. The project, which will be located two miles from the port’s main entrance, is the first investment in cold storage infrastructure since Hurricane Katrina.

The Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive, or MFLEX program.

CORE X GULFPORT expects to break ground on the project by the end of the year. The company plans to create 48 jobs in its first year of operation, with projected growth to 73 new jobs by its second year of operation.
