Sleep King Golden Mattresses

The Golden brand is lesser known than some, like Tempurpedic. Still, it is a quality product with many foam and non-foam options that we think you'll love. Choose from standard memory foam, hybrid, and innerspring options while visiting our showroom in Wilmington.

Tips on Choosing the Best Bed

There's much more to choosing a good bed than how you think it will look in your bedroom. There's plenty to think about, from innerspring options to memory foam and even hybrid mattresses. At Sleep King, our priority is our customers. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service. We want to do right by you, which why we want to be sure you find the perfect bed when you visit our mattress store in Wilmington, NC. To help you get started, here are a few tips on choosing the best bed for your sleep needs.

Visit a Showroom

Visit a Showroom

This tip might seem like a no-brainer to some, but it's important that you visit a showroom so that you can lay on different beds to get a feel for what you like. At Mattress King, you will have the chance to explore different styles, designs, and shapes, and mattress materials. Finding a bed online at a price you can afford is great, but you should lie on the bed first, not just look at it on a screen.

Determine Budget

Determine Budget

Here's a surprising fact: just because a mattress costs more money, it doesn't mean it's going to be a better bed. Sure, more expensive beds might have newer technologies and materials, but not everyone has the budget to walk into a mattress store in Wilmington and spend $3,000. Figure out what price range you're comfortable paying and look at the best options for your bottom line.

Consider Bedroom Size

Consider Bedroom Size

Before you swing by our showroom and start trying out beds, it might be a good idea to measure the space where your new mattress will go. If your bedroom is on the small side, a king-sized bed might be too big. Similarly, a small bed in a huge room might make for strange aesthetics. Aim for a reasonable amount of room around your bed - enough where you can walk around comfortably. As mentioned above, get specific measurements of the area you plan to use. That way, you have peace of mind knowing your new mattress will fit in your bedroom.

Choose a Mattress Material

This tip often comes down to personal preference. It will take a little bit of trial and error to figure out which material works best for your back - innerspring, memory foam, or latex. While your friend's and family's opinions matter, keep in mind that their mattress choice was subjective. What works for them won't necessarily work for you.

Need a quick refresher on different mattress materials? Here's a quick overview

Innerspring

Also called coil mattresses, innerspring beds are probably the most well-known on this short list. Innerspring mattresses are often more affordable than their latex and memory foam counterparts. These beds are ideal for people who want a lot of support and a cooler night's sleep.

Latex

This material is known for its great cooling properties and overall comfort. With latex, there are no strange off-gassing odors like you sometimes get with memory foam. Latex mattresses are ideal for people who want a responsive, bouncy feel and may have problems sleeping hot.

Memory Foam

First developed by NASA in the 70s, memory foam is probably the most popular material in the modern mattress market. Memory foam conforms to every inch of your body, giving you maximum comfort and support. Memory foam is also know for its anti-motion properties. Memory foam can be a great choice if you tend to toss and turn at night and sleep with a partner who wakes up when you do. Memory foam mattresses are ideal for people who need pressure relief, good support, and refreshing comfort.

Think About Your Back

Think About Your Back

If you have a bad back, it's crucial that you find a mattress with proper support. Slat and spring beds often offer plenty of support, but latex and memory foam options have come a long way. If you want memory foam or latex but find the support to be subpar, consider an adjustable base instead of a normal platform. That way, you can always sleep in a comfortable position that benefits your back.

Since Electronic Lab Logs won the Coastal Entrepreneurship Award for health care and the NC IDEA SEED grant in 2020, the Wilmington startup has continued to build capital and grow.

A recently named participant in the CED Venture Connect conference, Electronic Lab Logs plans to close a second seed round of $1.8 million by the end of the month, said co-founder Daniel Summers. Early-stage venture capital firm VentureSouth, which has a chapter in Wilmington, has committed to lead the round, Summers said.

Electronic Lab Logs helps reference labs like Quest Diagnostics to standardize their data and documents electronically. Summers said establishments like this have different kinds of equipment to perform a host of tests, so keeping track of paper records gets “out of control.” His company helps digitize that process through an electronic database.

VentureSouth has a network of over 550 investors and multiple chapters across the Southeast and has invested more than $80 million to date. The Wilmington market director is Josh Hallingse, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce’s small business director. The firm committed to leading the seed round but is still in the process of gathering capital commitments, Summers said, so the final contribution to the round is undecided.

The firm will also help to syndicate the remaining funds in the round until it closes, which Summers said is on track for the end of the month, around the same time the company will present to more investors at Venture Connect.

“If we've not already reached our [seed round] minimum by then, we're trying to get our round closed or meet the minimum by the end of March, and so that timing works out great,” Summers said.

“Definitely excited to meet the other investors there," he added. "And also, there's a couple of industry experts there that we're excited to talk with as well as far as partnerships are concerned."

Similarly, Summers said he enjoys working with VentureSouth because of its network of angel investors.

“The cool thing about their model is whenever you syndicate so many angel investors together, you undoubtedly have a lot of experience and so there's been so many good industry-experience players in that group,” he said.

He expects the round to include about five groups from across the Southeast, including groups from Tennessee and South Carolina.

Electronic Lab Logs’ last seed round was completed in late 2021, totaling $650,000, according to Summers. The increase in capital with this round will allow the company to hire a sales position, build on its software to improve integration with other lab platforms and develop a new module, Summers said.

The team currently consists of five full-time employees and five full-time contractors. The plan is to hire two sales roles, a compliance officer and a team of three state-side developers, Summers said. If all the planned hires are made, the company would effectively double its number of full-time employees.

On the riverfront in downtown Wilmington, one project is wrapping up while another could get underway early next year.

The Alton Lennon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse re-opened for business in the fall. The building, which is located at 2 Princess St., had been closed since 2018 when it was damaged by Hurricane Florence.

Although major repairs have wrapped up, minor closeout work is still being completed. But that ongoing work doesn’t affect the building’s day-to-day operations, according to Will Powell, a public affairs officer with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

The scope of the completed work includes repairs to the building’s envelope and mechanical and electrical systems along with the “restoration of historic finishes and features to preserve the historic fabric of the building,” Powell wrote in an email to the Business Journal.

Congress funded the project via the Disaster Relief Act of 2019, which provided the GSA with funding to address necessary repair and alteration projects resulting from Hurricane Florence.

In 2019, the GSA awarded contracts to “design the building repairs to return the building to service as quickly as possible,” according to Powell. That included South Carolina-based CEMS Engineering & Architecture, Inc. and California-based AECOM Technical Services, Inc.

In March 2021, the federal agency awarded a $31 million construction services contract for the project to Alabama-based contractor Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC.

Coinciding with some of the federal building repairs, were a handful of investments along Water Street and the riverfront funded by the city of Wilmington and the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.

Completed in 2017, the first phase of improvements included the CFPUA-funded installation of new water lines and dry gravity sanitary sewer lines between Market and Princess Streets along with city-funded streetscaping and park improvements at the foot of Market Street, according to Lauren Edwards, a communications manager with the city of Wilmington.

The second phase of work, which wrapped up in 2022, included a CFPUA-funded project that installed new water lines and dry gravity sanitary sewer lines between Princess and Walnut Streets. A city-funded project added streetscaping and new storm drainage infrastructure.

These first two phases allowed for the installation of a new deep gravity sanitary line to "facilitate the future removal of the pump station at the busy pedestrian area of Market Street in conjunction with the Walnut Street Pump Station Improvements Project," according to Edwards.

A third phase includes more streetscape improvements and the renovation of a park in front of the federal building between Market and Princess Streets. That work is set to take place early next year, Edwards wrote in an email to the Business Journal. The remaining work is expected to cost the city about $3 million.

Last summer, city leaders approved buying 1.6 acres of riverfront property in the area for $1.2 million for a park. The land was formerly owned by the Coast Guard and used as a docking site for the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence.

Data analytics startup Lumos Technologies launched Lumos Portfolio Score, a tool to help financial institutions analyze risk associated with their small business loan portfolios.

The Wilmington-based fintech’s newest offering is the first back-end model in its product suite, said Co-founder and CEO Brett Caines. The company launched its first product, the Lumos Prime+ Score, in January 2023 followed by the Lumos Business Report and Qualification Grade in November. Both previous offerings help lenders decide where to put their money. The portfolio score helps monitor closed loans for performance.

“You can actually get ahead of any issues with a small business loan and work to resolve what those issues are, so it's about being proactive, rather than reactive,” Caines said about the portfolio score. “A lot of times, banks only react when the credit weakness becomes obvious. They don't have a way to get ahead of it,”

The fintech aims to make it easier for small business lending banks to say, 'yes,' Caines said. As a bank’s loan portfolio grows, monitoring the individual loans and identifying trends becomes increasingly difficult, he said. Lumos Portfolio Score automates that process by analyzing a file from a bank and a few points of information on the loan from the portfolio manager.

It incorporates macroeconomic factors, such as historic trends in the industry, to point the portfolio manager towards investments that are potentially weaker than others, Caines said. The model creates a lead for a human to then investigate, he added.

Lumos Technologies was founded in 2021 by former Live Oak Bank executives. Caines formerly served as the company's Chief Finance Officer. His fellow co-founders, Stephen Hayes and Youri Nelson formerly served as senior vice president of analytics and vice president of analytics, respectively.

"The application of technology, coupled with the crucial role of data, is the new standard for proactive loan portfolio management," Nelson said in a company news release announcing the product. Nelson serves as Lumos’s chief technology officer.

Caines said now that Lumos Technologies has both front- and back-end products, the startup wants to round out its offerings for all stages of a small business loan’s life cycle — "from the moment a bank is trying to identify who, where, what to lend to,” he said, “all the way through the day that small business pays off the loan.”
